ISF produces a growing number of publications each year. The Bauhinia was the first bilingual secondary student research journal published annually. Other developments include the annual project Wu Tong, containing creative writing in Chinese. Further below is another annual publication of Sci-Fi short stories, a joint undertaking by the English and Science departments, as part of their Inter-Disciplinary Unit (IDU).
All of these journals, hardcopy and electronic, are managed under the Shuyuan Studio, a branch of Shuyuan established as a part of the Strategic Plan, 2018 – 2023.
These existing and planned publications of student literature require faculty support which the Editorial Board provides, along with the guidance of the Shuyuan faculty.
The purpose of publishing Wu Tong is to offer a platform for students to display their Chinese creative writing skills, enabling these burgeoning ‘phoenixes’ to perch upon the branches of the Wutong trees and emit their refreshing and vibrant cries that surpass the old. The narratives featured in Wu Tong are primarily original works by students enrolled in “Chinese Classics” courses, drawing inspiration from the ancient texts they study. In 1936, Mr. Lu Xun released “Old Tales Retold,” employing his imagination to endow ‘stories’ with a contemporary essence, thus forging a novel trajectory for modern fiction and establishing an enduring classic. The first volume of Wu Tong is named in homage, signifying nearly a century later, the continuation of those ‘stories’ through the writings of bilingual and bicultural authors.
Students in Grade 9 write short stories towards a publication that emerges from their English and Science classes. Some of these students go on to edit their peer’s work and produce the annual Science Fiction Anthology.
